Castle of Moeche (A Coruña)

It is a medieval castle of the 14th century, located in the parish of San Xurxo (Moeche), in the region of El Ferrol. It belonged to the family of the Andrade. It has octagonal shape and has the parade ground and the homage tower (contains engraved three armorial bearings of the houses of the Osorio, of the Enríquez and of the Valcárcel). He was the protagonist of the peasant revolt of the Irmandiños, oppressed vassals who took up arms against feudal lords and destroyed the castle, to rebuild it again at the end of the 15th century.

Moeche

Town Hall

Moeche is a municipality located in the far north of the province of A Coruña in the Autonomous Community of Galicia, belongs to the comarca of Ferrol. Are five parishes: Abade, Labacengos, Santa Cruz, San Xoán and San Xurxo, in this last lies the castle of Moeche, overlooking a valley crossed by the river Xubia Grande. The name of the municipality comes from a population who founded a Knight (village Modesti) before the 10th century.
